In assisting with my own grandmothers care both in a nursing home facility as well as when we had the opportunity to bring her home. I realized that caring for Seniors was not a job for the faint of heart. When my grandmother was in the nursing home setting, our family was the only ones who came to facility to see their loved ones and I realized quickly that I could lend an ear or spread some cheer to them while I was visiting. As destructive as Dementia and Alzheimer's was to my grandmothers fond memories of her childhood in Poland or even remembering our names, I'll never forget that regardless of where she thought she was or who we were... you could always get her to polka and teach you dirty words in Polish. As time past, of course her care become more and more difficult, but all of us in the family had to remind each other of the good times. We had to put aside our frustrations of telling "Busha" 20 times in the last 20 minutes that you were her granddaughter or her daughter or that it was Monday or Tuesday, etc. Looking back on my personal experience with my grandmother, I have come to realize how difficult emotionally, physically, and mentally the task can be.
