I wasn't sure of what my career would be until I began working for a rehab company at a nursing home full-time and at an assisted living part-time. Not everybody is fortunate to have living grandparents. I am one of those unfortunates. I began working at the assisted living facility that my maternal grandmother was living at as an activities staff on the Alzheimer's unit one year before she passed. I was able to spend a lot of time with her and I continued to work there one year after her passing. I kept my mind frame stuck on "granddaughter", and I secretly made every other resident there my "own" grandparent. It is very easy to refill a cup of water, or recline the chair of an elderly person with no trouble to me. The smile and thanks you receive in return is worth more joy than you realize, simply because it costs you nothing but time. I have instantly been deemed "granddaughter" to several residents at my current job at the nursing home. And I am extremely proud even though my job title is not listed caregiver. It makes me so happy to be able to go out of my way to do for people that can not do for themselves.
