Washington - Legal Resources
Retirement can bring on a whole new, much welcomed, lifestyle, but it is not without its own tasks.  One of the most important things a senior can do is to write a legal will. The job is not fun and not fast, but it will provide you with peace of mind that your estate will be properly distributed upon your death.

Without a will, the state will assume control of your estate and will distribute your property and assets according to a predetermined formula. These formulas are strictly based on bloodlines and marriage and are unable to consider the quality of relationships between people. Generally, the state will not distribute everything the way you would have wanted, but without a legal will instructing otherwise, that is what happens.  If you write a will, your family will be saved from  legal tangles during the grieving process.

Washingtonlawhelp.org has put together an easy-to-navigate guide to legal initiatives in Washington.  The issues at hand are not always easy to understand or negotiate, but the first step to a sound decision, as always, is education.

One of the most misunderstood legal elements of aging is that of guardianship.  Seattle attorney Matt Perkins answers some frequently asked questions about guardianship, remarking on the comeuppance and disadvantages of naming a guardian.
