I was the primary caregiver, and had the durable power of attorney for my grandmother for five years. She was a total care patient in a SNF, from a stroke that left her paralyzed and unable to walk and care for herself. She was also diagnosed with vascular dementia. My regular visits included feeding meals, diaper changes, grooming, outpatient medical appointments, and companionship. I am currently a hospice volunteer, involved with patient and respite care, and also volunteer at an adult day care center for persons with Alzheimer's and dementia. I love assisting seniors and the terminally ill. I understand, from first hand experience, how primary caregivers need help caring for their loved ones.
