I have over 23 years experience working with families taking care of loved ones with memory loss, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, and/or elders who are frail or who have other chronic illnesses. I worked at an adult day program for frail elders and adults with dementia for over three years and as friendly visitor for two years. I am knowledgeable about dementia and similar conditions, behavioral issues associated with dementia, San Francisco community resources, and general issues of aging. I am 60 years old and a "new" senior myself. Providing care to older adults brings out the best in me: patience, kindness, slower pacing, and the ability to have one-on-one conversations that involve active listening on my part. And at the end of the day, knowing that I have made someone's life a bit easier, less lonely, hopefully more comfortable and enjoyable, to whatever extent possible, supports my sense of being of use to others, to help alleviate the suffering of others if even just a little; and to enjoy the connections made as much as possible.
