I've been a live-in companion, at different times, with a 71-year-old woman and a particularly delightful to me 94-year-old woman. I'm now more than less a live-in companion and frequent caregiver to my 87-year-old mother and sometimes to my soon-to-be 85-year-old father. All four of these folks were, and are still, mentally alert and relatively physically capable to some degree, in the case of my father, quite much so. I've also lived in five different nursing homes, as a patient, from two days to 10 months. I was in my early 50's during those years, and thus was usually one of the youngest residents. Most of my neighbors were much older, and in most cases significantly further along than I was towards the end of life. The experiences I had being in and out of nursing homes and hospitals during my seven or so years of health adventures only increased my already felt appreciation of elders. Earlier this year, I took training to be a hospice volunteer, though I've yet to be one. I'm sure that will come, too, in it's own time.
