New Jersey - Housing Resources

With so many different options for senior care out there, how do you choose which one is right for your loved one? Each housing option serves different needs and levels of care, so you should investigate the options that are best for your loved one.

Independent Living

The key difference between independent living and other housing options is in the amount of overall health and assistance in daily living activities. If your loved one requires round-the-clock help with eating, dressing, and using the bathroom, or requires regular medical assistance, other housing options (such as assisted living or nursing homes) may be a better fit for your family because the independent living staff provides no medical supervision or care.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities

These communities provide continuous housing, personal services, and health care at one central location. In CCRCs, a loved one would be able to remain at the retirement community as their personal and health care needs change.  If your loved one is looking to stay in one location for a long time, a CCRC may be the best option.

Nursing Homes

Nursing home care is typically provided for people who need long-term care, rehabilitation after surgery, or are recovering from a more severe medical condition. Nursing homes provide 24-hour nursing care and basic activities care such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and more.

Assisted Living Communities

Assisted living communities are designed to provide residents with basic day-to-day activities assistance. Assisted living communities differ from nursing homes in that they don't offer complex medical services.  Assisted living communities are designed to provide residents with assistance with basic activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and more.

Home Care

Generally, home care is appropriate whenever a person prefers to stay at home but still needs ongoing care that cannot easily or effectively be provided solely by family and friends.
