I have done house sitting and watched a golden retriever for a week while the family was on vacation a few times. I grew up with all kinds of animals. I had three shelties growing up, and hamsters and guinea pigs. I now have a pit-bull and chihuahua and two hamsters. I took in a kitten that my mom's cat had. I had to bottle feed it because it was taken from its mother too early. That cat became an outside cat and got pregnant and had babies. I cared for the babies and found them all homes.
