During the summer of 2006, I learned something new about myself, I work great with kids. I discovered this during an internship as a Staff Counselor for underprivileged children. From the moment we were seated on the bus, I knew I would have an enjoyable time with the children.
I had babysat plenty of times for family and friends, but this would be my first trained experience. The camp turned out to be harder than I expected; we had a lot of fun, but there were also a lot of disagreements and trying situations. At the end of the internship, superlative names and awards were distributed. I was nicknamed 'The Rock' for my approaches and efforts with the children, as well as the staff, during the high and low times of the program. My next professional experience was with a School after graduating from University of Cincinnati. I initially applied to be a short term substitute teacher (grades Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd) but had no idea I would fall in love with the teaching aspect. The children took to me well and I performed better than expected, opening the door for me to also become the Physical Education teacher (grades Pre-Kindergarten through 6th) for the remainder of the year. Unfortunately, the campuses had to minimize staffing for the upcoming school year and I was let go at the end of the year.
I then moved back to Cincinnati and taught preschool in a daycare setting. Here I also had my own classes, which I planned and executed my own lesson plans for. I eventually began to float between the preschool and school age programs and had developed a strong love for both. I have moved back to Dayton, OH to be closer to my family; I've obtained stable employment with a local hospital network but would like the opportunity to work part time with children. Although I have no children of own, I easily develop great relationships with children and look forward to new opportunities.
