Dear Families,

My name is Melanie. I am 30 years old and originally from St. Paul, MN. Growing up in St. Paul I spent nearly all of my time outside, swimming, biking, playing, you name it. As an adult I still love the outdoors in any form. I am also extremely passionate about arts and crafts of all kinds.

I have been caring for children since I was 12 years old, starting as a baby sitter. When I was 16 years old, I began employment at a local child care care center, working with children 2 to 12 years old. I continued my employment in this center throughout college, until I was 23 years old. At that time, I participated in a short-term study abroad program in Holland.

While in college at Hamline University, I completed several courses in Elementary Education in addition to the courses for my Sociology degree. After I earned my BA, I began employment with Saint Paul Public Schools as a Special Education Teaching Assistant working with children with challenging behaviors and high emotional needs. I worked with this population for three years and decided that I was ready for a change of pace.

For the following two years, I worked for the St. Paul Public Schools' before- and after-school program. There I had my own group of first grade students who I absolutely loved! I planned educational and fun projects for these kids, as well as ensured their safety daily.

I have learned so much from the children I have cared for over the years: lessons in patience, caring, acceptance, understanding, and love. I have always known that working with children is my calling and it is my hope to continue becoming enriched by contributing to a wonderful family in the Fairbanks area. I will be living in Fairbanks for most of the summer, from the end of April through the end of July (my husband is a traveling medical professional).
