My time around children began when I was a kid myself, spending my younger days at my aunt's daycare with my four cousins and the other children she took care of. As I grew older, I began to observe the way she dealt with different kids and their behavior. I was lucky enough to see from a young age what worked, what didn't work, and how to handle a wide variety of situations. Fast forward to when I was around 13 years old, to the time when I began babysitting children myself. I learned a lot from the babysitting jobs I received from family and friends, taking care of kids ages 2-8. From a shy 4-year-old, to a misbehaving 7-year-old, every child I watched helped me improve as a babysitter and better understand how to handle everything that comes with taking care of children. In addition to the standard babysitting positions, I have spent numerous hours as a camp counselor in a few short sleep-away camps during my high school years, supervising, mediating conflicts, and of course, having fun with the kids. I have spent dozens of hours as a volunteer at an aquarium, where I had fun entertaining and educating children (and adults) about the ocean. During my senior year of high school, I babysat my cousin's two children, a 7-month-old and 1 1/2-year-old, for almost an entire year. I got the chance to not only gain valuable experience with the toddler/infant age group, but also had the chance to watch them grow and I got to be a large part of their lives. My experience taking care of children is all over the place, but in the best way; these varied experiences have given me the knowledge and expertise to handle a wide range of behaviors, personalities, and situations with kids of all ages. I love kids, and I would much rather deal with diapers, tantrums, and time-outs than a boring and mundane routine at a different job. Apart from the diapers and temper-tantrums, kids are so much fun to spend time with, they're constantly growing, and happy, and that is my favorite part about babysitting: getting to be a part of that positive energy.
