Hi there! I'm Julie, and I'm currently finishing up my undergraduate degree in sociology and speech pathology at Portland State University. I plan on taking a year off and getting as much experience working with children as I can before I apply to graduate school.

I have worked with children in a variety of settings. I have been babysitting on and off since I was 15. I'm the oldest of three, and although my sisters are 14 and 22, I still feel the need to look after them. I volunteered at a non-profit institute that helps children with developmental health disabilities. I assisted some of the Speech Pathologists while they were doing treatments with children. It was a wonderful experience, and it made me really want to pursue a career in Speech Pathology. I have also assisted in workshops in elementary schools to prevent bullying with a school counselor I know. I will be doing hearing screening in newborns for the next year. I wanted to have the opportunity to work in a hospital setting before I go on to graduate school.

I'm a very active person, and I would like to do as many activities with children as I can. I just took an art class for children, and I would love to use some of the projects I learned from that class with the children I look after. I think patience is one of the most important things to have when working with children, but most of all I would like to have a good time. I'm kind of a dork, and I think a lot of kids enjoy that about me.

In my free time I enjoy hiking around the Gorge, reading, and going to trivia night with friends. I'm also getting married next summer, so wedding planning will keep me very busy over the next year.
