I have spent a lot of time with babies and young children. In high school, I tutored homeless children ages 6-13 years old in after school homework. I spent a year and a half as a volunteer with homeless children in a shelter play space, with ages 2-7 years old, once a week, two hours per shift. I quit to do a month of traveling, but I do miss it. A friend who had very little family support asked me to watch her 2-week-old. My first day watching her little one, I had barely any interaction with newborns and I learned fast. She screamed if you put her down and the older one was getting into everything. Overwhelmed at first, I quickly learned how to balance one on my hip, and one on my feet. By the end of the night, I was exhausted, but I had a new understanding and appreciation for all parents. They are a handful, but they taught me so much. This same friend was having financial difficulties in 2008, and moved in with me with her 1 and 2-year-old girls, and I literally was a second mom for an entire year, so that she could get her life back on track. I would actually be the one who woke up, while she slept through their cries. I have two children that I watch occasionally, one little boy who is almost 2, and a little girl who is 3 years old. I have been volunteering in a first grade classroom since November and it has strengthened me to become a teacher. I have spent many hours with ages 6 and 7 years old, and they are so amazingly entertaining all of the time. During this past semester, I volunteered for an after-school program once a week, so I got to spend time with 4th and 5th graders. It's all so much fun, and I'm confident that I can give the best care to any child or children that I have the opportunity to care for. I am currently taking summer classes and taking on probably more than I can chew in the fall and spring semesters to finish up my degree, so I will not be able to commit as a part-time or full-time nanny. I am, however, available for occasional, one-time or as-needed care giving, and I can usually help out as a last minute fill in. If I'm available, I'll be there.
