I am a compassionate and caring mental health professional that recently moved to Portland from Peoria, IL. While living in Illinois, I provided crisis intervention in a school for children in a residential treatment facility that have behavior and mental health diagnoses. Using a variety of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) approved techniques, I would work with the youth to verbally de-escalate them during times of crisis. I believe that when a youth is having a crisis, it is because they have a need that is not being met and my goal is to help them explain that need in a non-threatening manor. I also worked as a residential counselor on a part-time basis at the same facility. In that position, I would assist the youth in all aspects of their daily routine. There were 11 youth to a unit and I, with the help of support staff, would teach the youth the framework to learn how to become independent. From room care, laundry, on and off grounds activities, etc., we monitored and taught the youth throughout the day.
