I have been doing childcare work for just about as long as I can remember, from babysitting for family members to being offered paid babysitting jobs in the neighborhood. My first regular, paid babysitting job was acquired during my time as an undergraduate in college. I was a sitter for a professor on campus, who had a 6-year-old daughter (who grew into a 13-year-old very quickly). We mostly played a lot of games, watched movies, and made snacks on Saturday nights while the parent was out. After college, I worked with special needs' high school students at a school outside of Baltimore. I did a lot of mentoring and educational guidance with adolescents and adults in that position. Now, having left education in search of different opportunities, I am working with 3 clients for short periods throughout the day doing special needs' care, tutoring, and babysitting. In the mornings, I work with 2 children (boys, ages 5 and 7), whom I do Spanish homework with, prepare meals for, and play with before taking them to school. In the afternoon, I work with an 8-year-old boy with special needs, who I take into the community on adventures (to parks, museums, etc.) before returning home with him to do homework or do a special activity (jumping on trampoline, watching movies, etc.) with all 3 boys (ages 3, 5, and 8). Finally, in the evening, I work with a 12-year-old boy with special needs doing special play-based activities to help him focus attention and develop positive socialization skills. Overall, I like what I do because it allows me to play an important role in the development of these young people's lives.
