I have a 10-year-old nephew and 7-year-old niece that I've babysat since birth. I've given newborn toddler, and little kid baths, mixed formula & prepared bottles, bottle fed (and burped), changed diapers (I've dealt with circumcisions, diaper rash), helped potty train, and helped with homework. I've implemented positive social skills and I'm very encouraging of little minds.
I've babysat cousins (newborn to 4) and children of friends. I've also worked as a summer day-camp counselor in charge of 18 8-year-olds as well as 3 to 13-year-olds (bus aide) where I played games, did organized sports, helped during swimming lessons, and did arts & crafts with them to motivate them to participate and be social even in 95 degree weather.
I like to lead by example and find "teaching moments" in every day life. I've administered first-aid, broken up sibling fights, administered parental-approved punishments, and given lots of high-fives to little hands.
You gain a child's respect and it's easy to maintain structure where necessary and still have time for fun. I have been known to run children ragged and present sleepy/sleeping kids to parents at the end of the day/night.
