Thank you for taking time to learn more about me. My availability is quite open until April. If you need a night out or a few days a week, I am able to help. I am the mother of one daughter, age 22, who has just graduated from College to become a Special Needs Teacher. Now that she has decided to be independent, I have a lot of "extra" time. I was the "mom" that went on all the field trips, was the room mother, and volunteered as much as I could. While she was in elementary and middle school, I took care of many children, of varying ages. I have also worked in an elementary school for 13 years. My job descriptions varied. I was a teacher's aide to twins with autism and the learning disabled, as well as lunch bunches for children that needed social skills. I have worked with a Spanish-speaking student, slowly introducing English. I worked for two years with a young girl, age 5, that was in a wheelchair.
For my last seven years, I worked in kindergarten. My job included assisting the teacher, working in small groups with instructions, and going to their specials with children that had difficulty with full groups. My job was not a job, it was a learning experience. I adored all of my children and they taught me it's okay to not act my age. It was not unusual for my assignment to be coloring, painting a project, or making gifts, and I would do them with the children.
In the same school, I was also a co-leader of an after school program that was originally developed for children with learning disabilities. With the assistance from our school, we were able to open it to all students. Some struggled with homework; some came for the activities. We took field trips, and had visitors come in with a variety of activities for our children to have fun! I never considered what I did a job. I loved each and every day of going to work. Not only was I making a difference in their education, or being the big person that had my fingers wrapped with many hands, putting a band aid on a hurt finger, I was a friend. It was a new experience every day, as no two are the same. I made a difference in their education, but they gave me the most precious memories as they moved onto a "bigger" grade. I was certified in CPR until one year before leaving the system. I am trained to bathroom a small child that may be unable to do so due to disability, and trained in early intervention. I also took a class for beginner sign language.
