I have always been there to help the child, but to also allow them the ability to learn themselves, even if it does take a little longer. I believe it makes their mind stronger plus creates a positive attitude. Making the child laugh, and smile as much as he can, is very good for the body. I never did like "children should be seen and not heard," or to be used in moderation. I've seen parents use it full force and the child(ren) ends up growing away from them and ends up in the wrong crowd(s). I believe children should be heard because it helps with the way they mature, and creates good feelings that they know you are watching. A phrase used on me, "What you take out, you must put back," is a good way for the child to learn they can do for themselves, once they reach that appropriate age. I like to take walks at a park/nature, 'flash' cards, playing with stuffed animals (like a puppet), movement, and colors help with cerebral development.
