First things first, I absolutely love children. I have been caring for children of my family/friends for as long as I can remember. I believe strongly that children need to be well taken care of, which has led me to have numerous child care experiences.
As of late, I have had much hands-on experience with a newborn. My sister had a baby in December, which has added greatly to my experience with infants. I am in the same household as my niece, so I do it all, as needed of course. I care for my niece at least 3 times a week while my sister works.
I also have babysat for a friend of mine numerous times as needed. Her daughter is 2 years old now, but I have been actively involved in her life since birth; diapers, playtime, feedings, nap, bedtimes, you name it. Currently, I babysit every Friday night among other times.
In grad school, I cared for a male infant from when he was 6 weeks to 10 months. I cared for him part time (25-35 hours) and loved every minute of it. I also cared for his 3-year-old sister at least one day a week, if not more. While I was not certified, the mother of this family provided me with the DVD on Infant CPR, which I watched and practiced on a dummy.
I have also volunteered in my church nursery on numerous occasions, as well as taught and helped in Sunday School classes for children of all ages.
Along with all of that, I have my Master of Social Work from the University of Illinois, with a concentration in schools. This degree required an internship in the school setting, which I successfully completed. I also received my Bachelor of Social Work from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. In this degree, I was required to complete many volunteer hours in agencies where I worked with children of all ages and backgrounds; for example, small children in a crisis nursery, grade school children in a tutor/mentor setting, middle school children at youth groups, etc.
