I have always enjoyed being around children. I started babysitting when I was in 7th grade and continued through high school in the Portsmouth area. I then followed my dream of becoming a teacher and graduated in 2000 from the University of Vermont with an Early Childhood Education and Nutrition Degree (I also minored in sustainable living and organic farming) My college years were filled with volunteer work with children on the East Coast and oversees (among these experiences I lived in Zimbabwe for a semester working at an orphanage and teaching fifth grade English at a near by school) I also was a camp counselor for a summer in the southern mountains of Georgia. Fresh out of College I taught Home Economics (now called Life Skills) at a middle school in Barre City, VT. After realizing I was not suited for the public school system I went on to teaching at a Montessori School in Stratham, NH for 2 years. I worked with ages 3-6 during the day and then ran and after school program with ages 3-13. During my time there I feel in love with the Montessori approach to teaching with nurturing the spirit of the child through meaning experiential and hand-on experiences and lessons. Fortunately and unfortunately I have not taught in a classroom for 4 years because I bought my mother's boutique in Exeter, NH so she could retire after 41 years in retail. It was a huge career change that I do not regret but I absolutely miss teaching and being around children. (I miss their humor, and arts/crafts fun activities, and cooking with kids, the lesson they teach me, etc. etc...) Owning a shop has been the hardest thing I have ever done. Over the past several years I have transformed the store into a Green boutique focusing on eco-friendly, fair trade, and locally hand made products. I do get to teach everyday - telling women and other customers about how to live a more earth-friendly living style and how to consciously consume. Even though my career is very satisfying I am hoping to find a part time (which could move into a full time after Christmas) position working for a loving and peaceful family in the seacoast. I would love to find a family that believes in healthy living and the importance of connecting their children to the Earth and the natural world. I do not believe in TV (I have not owned one for over 10 years) so I will not put your children in front of it ever if I don't have to. I would much prefer to play outdoors, garden with them, cook, read, make art, sew, play games, and giggle together! My husband and I are vegetarians and grow the majority of our own vegetables in the summer. (We also believe in eating organically and locally) I would love to prepare and feed children healthy and tasty foods when I care for then (in other words I would not feed them junk food or candy) Thanks for considering me as a potential care giver/teacher for your children. I truly look forward to working with a sweet family.
