I love kids, so I consider myself lucky that I am among the oldest of 20 grandchildren. By growing up around such a big family, I've learned how to interact with children of a wide range of ages.

When I was in middle and high school in Iowa, I babysat for neighbors and family friends. I regularly spent weekends with two boys (ages 4 and 7), taking them to the park, preparing meals, reading stories, and doing light housecleaning after putting them to bed.

I also regularly sat for a girl (age 8) and her brother (age 3). We liked to make up new games to play in the house and to do arts and crafts. The little boy had a medical condition which affected his kidneys, so he was on a strict diet. I had to be sure to prepare food that followed those guidelines.

I've since earned my Bachelor's degree (2010) and worked at a preschool as a Teacher's Assistant. I spent time with the whole class, helping with games and crafts, supervising outdoor play, and preparing snacks. However, my job was specifically to care for a child with special needs. In my short time with the preschool, I learned firsthand how to care for and play learning games with children ages 3-5. I left my job at the preschool because I was offered a position teaching full-time in Korea.

For the past year, I worked as a Teacher of English as a Second Language in South Korea. While I wouldn't categorize the work as traditional child care, it did strengthen my sense for child development. I recently returned from my adventure, and have moved from my hometown in Iowa to Windsor, Colorado.
