My name is Ashton. I am 20 years old and have been helping to take care of children from the time I was 10. I have three little sisters two of whom are identical twin girls ages seven. My other sister is now 13. Over the years I have helped to raise those three little girls from the time they were infants. One of the funniest memories I recall is with the twins when they were unable to crawl but instead rolled. I can remember my sisters wriggling free by rolling in separate directions while watching baby Einstein and me having to hurriedly chase them both down. I also have a 2-year-old God child who I have helped take care of. The two of us enjoy reading and playing together. Playing usually consists of chasing each other around in circles and hiding behind the kitchen counters.
I am currently a student at Black Hills State University. My love for children has extended into my future career which is why I am studying Early Childhood Development and Special Education. In my free time I enjoy reading, running, and writing. I have also decided that because I have a passion for writing, I am minoring in the art. School is very important to me. I am an honors student and I take my education seriously. I attend classes Tuesdays and Thursdays but am free the rest of the week. I believe that education is not a punishment or something that is only useful for a successful career, but a privilege and an opportunity to truly make a difference in this world. I love children, I love working with children, and I believe that helping them is what I am good at.
As stated before I have had quite a bit of experience working with kids. Aside from helping to raise my sisters and God child, I have also worked as a YMCA life guard, helped in the kindergarten classrooms, baby sat numerous children anywhere from ages infancy to 10. I have also done volunteer work that included helping children during what is called "skate night " at the Custer YMCA. In school I am constantly learning more knowledge on the most effective ways to teach and communicate with children. Classes discuss things such as the best literature for children; activities that spark a child 's personal interests, handling various difficult situations, and the importance of viewing each child as a unique individual with his/her own personal strengths and capabilities.
