I began as a part-time nanny for an Overland Park family with two young daughters while I was in high school, Thursdays through Sundays. During the summer of 1999, after my freshman year of college, I was a full-time live-in nanny in suburban Chicago, for a family with two boys, then ages 9 and 11. During college I worked at KU's Edna A. Hill Center Child Development Center, where students are able to develop and implement their own curriculum and work at the on-site day care under the supervision of qualified instructors. While I was obtaining my master's degree at KU's School of Social Welfare, I was employed with KVC Behavioral HealthCare, a private foster care contractor. I worked as a Family Support Worker, and worked closely with children and families, supervising visits and providing education on parenting/discipline. With my master's degree, I have served as a Clinical Assessment Specialist, primarily working with children and families in their first 20 days of entering state care, interviewing and assessing for strengths and needs in order to determine what (we hope) is the most effective (and fast) way to safely and successfully reunite families. At this point, I look forward to spending more one-on-one, "hands-on" time with youth again.
