I worked at a local daycare the summer of 2004. While working there, I was responsible for up to 15 kids at a time. I worked with kids ranging from infants to 5th graders. While in college, I worked in a Children's home as a practicum student with kids from age 12-18. I worked there a total of 360 hours, over the period of two semesters. I loved being a psychology major, because it gave me the chance to work at the children's homes. I love working with kids. Also while growing up, I helped my family take care of my two younger siblings. One of them is 5 years younger than me and the other is 10 years younger than myself. I felt that has helped me greatly in being able to care for children as well as I do. After college, I worked hands on with the infants (up to age 4, which was the state maximum) in my classroom daily. I helped provide a suitable atmosphere for them to learn and grow. Being with children for 8+ hours a day, I believe you play a vital role in their growth and development into healthy children. Still to this day, I keep in close contact with many of the parents. I like to think I had a strong impact on their children's lives. As my role expanded to working with the daycare director, it was my responsibility to help plan classroom curriculum throughout the daycare for all ages. This helped me further understand what learning stages are appropriate at each age and also understand that having fun not only can be, but should be, an important part of a child's learning experience.
