Profile of Kayla J.

Part-Time, 3 Years of Experience

I first began working with children at the age of 17. My first age group were school aged children. I loved the experience it gave me because I learned more about myself and the children taught me things as well. As I gained more experience, I moved on to a new age group- preschool. This was the busiest I had ever been in working with children! I was constantly thinking of new ways to keep them entertained and interested in activities for as long as possible. I enjoyed reading to them, singing to them (even though I can't hold a note!) it was this age group where I gained more patience. My experience continued on until I started working with the most laid back age group- infants! I started not knowing how to change diapers and worried about how I would know when to feed them, change them, when they were tired, basically anything that a mother knew how to do with her infant, I didn't. My first diaper changed took awhile because I took everything off. Then I put the diaper on backwards. But I can say now that I am no longer a beginner! This age group I learned not only the basics of taking care of infants, but also I found that this is where I was meant to be. I learned that I was most comfortable here- even with the stress of more than one (the ratio was one to four). I learned that I could really be myself and truly love the art of taking care of children. My infant experience grew until I began my experience of the most active of them all 2-year-olds! Here, I was able to really see that they indeed, were busy. I used my knowledge of diapering with this group so I wasn't completely new. I learned even more ways to get their attention and I was so happy to see when it worked. Here, I learned that I could be more silly and goofy because they would do exactly the same thing. I loved working with the two's despite the trademark name which they were given. In all my years working with children, I have become a better person and loved touching the little lives of children who would become a big part of the future.
