Profile of Mariah L.
Part-Time, 10 + Years of Experience
I have 10 plus years of experience baby-sitting. I began baby-sitting in high school on a as needed basis for occasional gigs such as date night. At this time, I began to attend weekend conferences with my mom and the company she worked for. I was used to baby-sit the kids in the company in the evenings while the adults attended banquet dinner parties and or meetings. I would baby-sit anywhere from 5 - 18 kids at a time these evenings and the ages ranged from 5 months - 12. I was paid a flat rate per kid as arranged by the company and did this for a couple years. I began volunteering as a Camp Counselor for the American Respiratory Alliance of Western PA at their camp for asthmatics called Camp Huff n Puff. I had around nine campers ages ranging from 8 - 13. I was in charge of regular camp counselor duties such as getting the kids to bed, making sure they had taken their showers, getting them up in the morning, assigning tasks for meal times, organizing, and participating in group challenges including a ropes challenge course, getting the kids to their med checks (this was special to this camp because all of the campers had asthma, they would get checked by a doctor and receive their medications, each camper went at specific times throughout the day, so I had nine different schedules to keep track of), I also participated in education sessions where we taught the kids about their asthma, how it worked and how to take care of it, and also participated and organized fun activities such as a dance and campfire time with S mores!I began to do baby-sitting/nanny/mother helper jobs when I started to attend college. This was more of a consistent basis, not so much occasional gigs (although I still did this as well). I would be with a family for two to four days a week. Sometimes, I would watch the kids while the parents worked from home, or did work in the house. I also watched kids when parents were at work, or were out running errands. I helped with light housework, meal preparation, cleaning, getting bottles ready, arranging activities for the kids, going to the park, enjoying local activities or attractions that the area has to offer. These positions were more of a nanny job, because I was there for a consistent time and a stable part of the kids lives and family.
I began volunteering for the American Diabetes Association, at their summer camp for kids with Diabetics. I may be used as a part of the medical staff because I am in Nursing School, or may be used as a general volunteer doing whatever they need help doing. I love to do this kind of volunteer work, because I am younger and the kids really have fun with me, I am helping an organization that is trying to do good, and making a difference in multiple lives.
I love to be around kids. Someday, I hope to be a mother myself, I feel it is one of the hardest jobs out there, but one of the most rewarding. I like to surround myself with kids because they are so loving, affectionate, full of life and energy.
I have had the pleasure of being apart of new life being brought into this world. I have helped deliver babies during my experiences in nursing school. I was also given the opportunity to educate new parents on bathing, taking care of, tracking wet diapers etc with the care of their newborn. I also loved my Pediatric rotation, where I was able to take care of sick kids, and spend time with them, and help them get better and maybe feel a little happier while they were in the hospital.
I have experience with newborn babies from my OB rotation, and have experience baby-sitting or being a nanny to babies 4 weeks of age up until the age of 12. I am comfortable with following the parents rules, disciplining the children the way the parents want me to, playing dress up, playing with dolls or trucks, arts and crafts, story time, bedtime, bath time, dressing the kids for the day, playing games, taking walks, going to the park, watching kids movies, culturing them by watching ballets or musicals and signing and dancing right with them, and enjoying some of the local attractions.
I am very intrigued about how kids grow and develop throughout life, I like to share with parents what I have learned throughout my schooling and reading books and am happy to help them in any way. I also love to look things up if I don't know the answer or am intrigued by it. I love to be a positive part of developing the children and being a part of their lives.
