Profile of Adriana L.

Part-Time, 7 Years of Experience

I have enjoyed playing with and caring for children of all ages for as long as I can remember. Whether it's running around outside in the grass playing "cops and robbers" (which generally just means I'm the "cop" and I chase all of them. :-)), or working with a group of kids preparing to perform a choir piece, string instrument number or play- I always have a wonderful time and appreciate the energy and excitement kids bring to any activity. When I was 15, I worked with my older sister at an orphanage in Romania, helping to care for twenty-five children ranging in age from 2 to 15. Our responsibilities included cleaning clothes and bedrooms, helping with homework, teaching violin lessons, giving baths and tucking each child into bed every night. Although difficult at times, that experience only served to increase my enjoyment of child care, and I still remember each child fondly on their birthday. Before and after my months in Romania I cared for a succession of small neighbor children, alternately bringing them over to play or reading them stories and tucking them in at their own houses. Each child I have cared for has been different and required different kinds of attention and/or care, but I have never taken care of a child I could not enjoy after getting to know his/her unique needs.
While I have not cared for children with special physical needs, I have worked with several children (in Romania) with emotional and behavioral problems and, with time, have been able to reach each one on some level. Because I am a biology major in college and am studying to become a high school science teacher, I also enjoy reading books to the kids I care for and teaching them simple things about various plants and bugs during our walks outdoors. With several of the children I have cared for I have combined violin and piano lessons/practice with the general care time and that has worked well in the past for those who were interested. I love dogs and am not allergic to any animals, and my short-term animal care experience includes fish, birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, sheep, goats, cows, horses and a pony- most of which I have feed and watched while the owners were on vacation. My favorite toys growing up included play mobiles, blocks, stomp rockets and squirt guns (not to exclude dressing dolls up and doing their hair-- I still have fun doing my cousins' hair), but I think that with the right amount of imagination one doesn't even need toys to have a good time, and some of my most cherished memories are of building entire miniature wilderness villages in the sand with sticks, rocks and grass. When I spend time with my small cousins and their friends, or the children who attend my church, we often make cards or scrapbooks together, go biking or rollerblading, play dress-up or sing. Not having played video or computer games growing up, I am not adept at any of them and could probably be beaten by a 5-year-old, but I love active outdoor games, as well as card and board games. Because of their unique perspectives on most everything, I often find kids to be the most enjoyable people to play any kind of game with.
Related Hobbies and Interests
I have many personal hobbies, which include singing, reading, writing and playing the piano and violin. I speak Spanish and love learning more about Spanish and Portuguese grammar and vocabulary.
