Profile of Sandra L.

Full-Time, 6 Years of Experience

Being the oldest child in a family makes watching children a normal routine. I started with baby-sitting at age 12. I watched two children. The family and I are good friends now. I watched their children for evening dates and eventually, full workdays when school was out of session. Learning that when making chocolate milk, it's probably a good idea to use milk and not WATER, and finding out that peaches covered in chocolate is NOT as ahhh tasty as chocolate covered strawberries are some of the interesting points of life that not many people find out.
I also have experience with children and adults with special needs. The summer before my senior year in high school, I volunteered at Southcentral Therapeutic Riding (STRIDE). STRIDE is a summer riding center dedicated to helping people with disabilities learn to ride horses. We played many games such as 'Red light, green light', 'Find the matching picture', 'Throw the ball into the bucket' etc... Watching their faces light up as you excitedly congratulate them on their horse riding skills or winning a game of 'Red light, green light' makes your heart melt. They give their love so unreservedly.
I have also had experience as a full-time baby sitter/nanny. I have watched five kids at a time. The person I was watching the kids for was a foster mother. The children (all under the age of nine) were an energetic little group. The ages of the children were: 8, three 5-year-olds, a 4-year-old, and a 15-month-old baby. I watched them from 6:30 in the morning to 4:30 in the afternoon because the woman worked in Anchorage. Having the children ask for you by name and bowling you over with hugs and hands upheld begging you to pick them up makes the sun shine a little brighter and the grass greener because you realize that you are 'on the other side.'
I've made plenty of 'tents' and 'igloos' to play in. Games of tag and blindmans bluff are games that are fun. Trying on the old clothes hidden in the upstairs closet, baking cookies, licking the cake mix bowl, and figuring out recipes with a child are experiences I can't live without.
