Between the Navy, students, locals and tourists, getting around Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads can be a traffic nightmare. Public transportation in Hampton Roads is stepping up to reduce the number of cars on then roads: Hampton Roads Transit, HRT provides an extensive bus, trolley and ferry system across Hampton Roads.

Getting around town by bus

  • HRT Bus service includes over 300 buses and 50 routes.
  • Complete the Trip Planner form to find out how far you are going and how long it should take.
  • See the HRT guide for popular tourist attractions.
  • Plan it yourself with HRT bus routes and schedules.
  • Visit the kiosk at 24th Street and Atlantic Avenue for FREE tickets starting 7am daily Memorial to Labor Days.
  • Buses are wheel chair accessible.
  • Cost: Adults $1.50; Youth $1; Children under 36" FREE
    • Exact change or or farecards are required.
    • Seniors enjoy half price fare with a Half Fare ID Card ($5) by mail or locally.

Getting around town by ferry

Avoid Norfolk's infamous tunnel traffic by taking the Elizabeth River Ferry.

  • Sails every 30 minutes, from 7 am to 9:45pm weekdays; 10am to 11:45pm weekends
  • Check website for exceptions.
  • Sails between:
    • Downtown Portsmouth's North Landing or High Street Landing to
    • Downtown Norfolk's Waterside or
    • Harbor Park (game days only).
  • Cost: $1.00; 50?? for seniors; discounted Ferry Farecards are available.
  • Wheel chair accessible.

Getting around town by trolley

Ride the VB Wave Trolley along the Strip or to attractions.
